Traditional Uses of Seaweeds with Dr. Dolly Garza

Description:This lively workshop includes an introduction to seaweed uses, a cooking demonstration with Fucus, lunch and a field trip to Stanley Park to explore local seaweeds. About the facilitator: Former Alaska Sea Grant Marine Advisory agent Dolly Garza has taught seaweed identification and use in Southeast Alaska communities for more than 15 years. Dr. Garza is a professor emerita of the University of Alaska Fairbanks; she earned her Ph.D. in marine policy from the University of Delaware. She grew up collecting and using seaweeds with her family in Ketchikan and Craig, and enjoys harvesting and creating new seaweed dishes. She continues teaching sustainable harvesting of seaweeds on Haida Gwaii in Canada. Dr. Garza is the author of the book Common Edible Seaweeds in the Gulf of Alaska.

Behind-the-scenes tour of the UBC Herbarium at the Beaty Biodiversity Museum

Description:This tour takes place within the renowned Beaty Biodiversity Museum. Come peak behind the cabinet doors as we explore the UBC Herbarium and its 90,000 algal specimens, and hear some of the history of important local collectors.

Protist Taxonomy: navigating the nomenclatural code, species, and practical considerations

Description: For authors who want to avoid making common nomenclature mistakes in their publications. This workshop will review and discuss articles of the ICZN Code (and beyond) that apply to common nomenclatural issues in publications.
